Standard Ebooks is a volunteer-driven project that takes public domain ebooks from sources like Project Gutenberg and completely reworks them into modern, professionally typeset editions.
What Makes Them Better Than Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg’s ebooks are functional but often rough — they are transcriptions of old print editions with minimal formatting. Standard Ebooks fixes this by:
- Clean, semantic HTML — Every book is hand-edited to use proper heading hierarchy, paragraph breaks, and blockquote formatting
- Professional typography — Hyphenation, smart quotes, em-dashes, and proper spacing
- Cover art — Every book gets a custom cover in the public domain
- Modern EPUB structure — Table of contents, endnotes, and metadata are all rigorously standardized
- Proofreading — Every book goes through multiple rounds of review against the original scan
The result is an ebook that looks and feels like a commercial release, not a hasty scan.

- Download in EPUB format (compatible with Kobo, Boox, PocketBook)
- For Kindle, you’ll need to convert the EPUB to AZW3 or use “Send to Kindle”
All Standard Ebooks are DRM-free and in the public domain. You can legally download, share, and convert them however you like.
