Reading Experience
Both devices have 300 ppi E Ink displays that are razor-sharp for text. The Paperwhite is 6.8 inches — slightly larger than the Clara BW’s 6 inches. That extra 0.8 inches gives you about 15% more text per page, which means fewer page turns. If you read large print or prefer larger fonts, the Paperwhite’s extra screen real estate is noticeable.
The Clara BW uses the newer Carta 1300 E Ink panel, which has marginally better contrast than the Paperwhite’s Carta 1200. In direct sunlight, the Clara BW’s screen is slightly darker and sharper. In practice, both are excellent — you’d need them side by side to tell the difference.
Ecosystem Lock-In
This is the real decision.
Kindle Paperwhite locks you into Amazon’s ecosystem. EPUB files must be converted (Send to Kindle handles this automatically, but it’s an extra step). Library borrowing via Libby only works in the US. Amazon’s store is the largest, and Whispersync syncs your reading position across all devices seamlessly.
Kobo Clara BW uses open formats. EPUB files work natively — drag and drop via USB. OverDrive/Libby integration is built into the device in 20+ countries, not just the US. Kobo’s store is good but not as vast as Amazon’s.
If you already have a Kindle library, the Paperwhite is the obvious choice. If you’re starting fresh or rely on library books, the Clara BW is better.
